Textbooks

There are three textbooks.

  1. Discrete Mathematics, by ZyBooks, offers an introduction to discrete mathematics through solving simple problems. It is an excellent way to learn, and is a useful introduction. But it does not cover all of the material that this course is required to cover, and does not offer sufficient depth in what it does cover, for it to be the only textbook.

Start each topic with this book. Read the assigned chapters and work the problems.

  2. Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications Kenneth H. Rosen, 8th Edition McGraw Hill, is a book that offers thorough coverage of discrete mathematics. It is more difficult to follow than the ZyBooks book, but if you read it after the lecture, you should be able to make sense of it.

  3. Roughly the first half of this course is concerned with logic and proofs. Proofs: A Long-Form Mathematics Textbook, by Jay Cummings, offers a gentle introduction to proofs. This is the discrete mathematics version (ISBN-13 number 979-8595265973), not the real analysis version.

Quiz and final exam dates

There will be four quizzes. They will be administered in class and will take the entire 50 minutes.

Quiz 1 Wednesday, September 22
Quiz 2 Friday, October 15
Quiz 3 Friday, November 5
Quiz 4 Monday, November 29
Final exam Section 1: Thursday, December 9, 8:00am–10:30am
Section 2: Friday, December 10, 11:00am–1:30pm

Practice quizzes and practice quiz due dates

There are two practice quizzes for every quiz. Print each practice quiz, complete it, and submit it on the due date for the practice quiz. You will receive it back with answers marked according to correctness, but without a score. The practice quizzes are due on the following dates.

Practice quiz Due date
Practice quiz 1, part (a) F. 9/3
Practice quiz 1, part (b) M. 9/13
Practice quiz 2, part (a) F. 9/24
Practice quiz 2, part (b) W. 10/6
Practice quiz 3, part (a) M. 10/18
Practice quiz 3, part (b) W. 10/27
Practice quiz 4, part (a) M. 11/8
