Responsibilities for CSCI 4230

 

Reinforcement and assessment of competence

Here, the topic is reinforced with additional instruction. The student is expected to put the ability to use and to demonstrate not only competence in its use but also competence in choosing where to use it. The student's competence is assessed.

The setting for student learning

All BSCS students are required to take CSCI 4230, where oral communication skills are reinforced and validated. Students make at least two team presentations to peers in this course. Effective communication skills are assessed in CSCI 4230.

Rubric
Good.

The oral presentation meets all of the following competencies. Each competency can receive a score of exceeds (3 points), meets (2 points), or does not meet (1 point). Thus, the maximum score a speech can receive is 24; and the minimum score is 8.

  • Begins with a broader context and narrows to the presentation topic
  • Communicates thesis/specific purpose of the presentation
  • Provides supporting material from the literature
  • There is a clear organizational pattern to the presentation
  • Uses appropriate language
  • Uses vocal variety in rate, pitch, and intensity
  • Uses appropriate pronunciation, grammar, and articulation
  • Uses physical behaviors that support the verbal message

The presentation received a score of 18 or above.



Satisfactory.

The oral presentation meets at least 75% of the following competencies. Each competency can receive a score of exceeds (3 points), meets (2 points), or does not meet (1 point). Thus, the maximum score a speech can receive is 24; and the minimum score is 8.

  • Begins with a broader context and narrows to the presentation topic
  • Communicates thesis/specific purpose of the presentation
  • Provides supporting material from the literature
  • There is a clear organizational pattern to the presentation
  • Uses appropriate language
  • Uses vocal variety in rate, pitch, and intensity
  • Uses appropriate pronunciation, grammar, and articulation
  • Uses physical behaviors that support the verbal message

The presentation received a score of 12 or above.



Unsatisfactory.

The oral presentation does not meet most of the following competencies. Each competency can receive a score of exceeds (3 points), meets (2 points), or does not meet (1 point). Thus, the maximum score a speech can receive is 24; and the minimum score is 8.

  • Begins with a broader context and narrows to the presentation topic
  • Communicates thesis/specific purpose of the presentation
  • Provides supporting material from the literature
  • There is a clear organizational pattern to the presentation
  • Uses appropriate language
  • Uses vocal variety in rate, pitch, and intensity
  • Uses appropriate pronunciation, grammar, and articulation
  • Uses physical behaviors that support the verbal message

The presentation received a score of less than 12.



Goal
At least 70% of students who pass CSCI 4230 are rated as either satisfactory or good and at least 30% rated as good.
