Objectives for 2018-2019

The program objectives indicate how the B.S. degree in computer science prepares students for life and work after college.

Each objective is supported by a collection of program outcomes, each describing specific abilities that students will have at the time of graduation that contribute to the desired objective. Click on the outcome number to see the outcome.

  1. Graduates of the B.S. in Computer Science at ECU will be prepared with a broad technical foundation in computer science and problem solving that allows them to enter professional practice or pursue graduate studies in the discipline.

The outcomes that contribute to this objective are:

    • 1 Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Graduates of the B.S. in Computer Science at ECU will be prepared with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to analyze, design and implement solutions to problems in computer science and software systems development.

The outcomes that contribute to this objective are:

    • 1 Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
    • 2 Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program's discipline.
    • 6 Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.
  3. Graduates of the B.S. in Computer Science at ECU will be prepared with communication skills and experience in teamwork that is conducive to professional practice in computing.

The outcomes that contribute to this objective are:

    • 3 Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
    • 5 Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program's discipline.
    • 6 Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.
  4. Graduates of the B.S. in Computer Science at ECU will be prepared with an understanding of the need for life-long learning and with an awareness of cultural, societal, and professional issues.

The outcomes that contribute to this objective are:

    • 4 Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
